14 May 2015 - The Philippine Consulate General and members of the Filipino Community in Hong Kong jointly commemorated Philippine Flag Day on May 10 with a simple program held at Morrison Hill Playground, the site where the first Philippine national flag was sewn in May 1898 by Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter, Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa Natividad, niece of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal.
The program started with the singing of the Philippine national anthem with musical accompaniment from the Mindanao Federation, and followed by a wreath-laying ceremony led by Philippine Consul General Bernardita L. Catalla and Deputy Consul General Christian L. De Jesus.
During her remarks, Consul General Catalla emphasized that the flag symbolizes both sovereignty and unity of the Filipino people. She also noted that the event was particularly important to the PCG and the Filipino Community as Hong Kong was where the first Philippine flag was sewn.
Another highlight of the program was a presentation by members of Lakbay Dangal of the history of the Philippine flag, as well as a reading of the poem Aming Bandila (Our Flag). The Knights of Rizal also participated in the event
On March 06, 1965, Presidential Proclamation No. 374 was issued declaring May 28 of each year as Philippine Flag Day to commemorate the date when the national flag was first unfurled in Imus, Cavite in 1898.
