01 June 2015 – Philippine Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio delivered a series of lecture on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) in Rome from May 21 to 22.

The Philippine Embassy in Rome, in cooperation with the Institute of Advanced Studies in Geopolitics and Auxiliary Science (IsAG), the Department of Documentary, Linguistic-Philological and Geographical Sciences, Masters Program in Geopolitics and Global Security of the Sapienza University and the Italian Geography Teachers’ Association, organized Justice Carpio’s lecture on the WPS at the Institute of Geography of the La Sapienza University.

Justice Carpio presented the Philippine perspective on the dispute to an audience composed of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), the diplomatic corps, particularly from the ASEAN Committee in Rome, academe, think tanks and students.

He also met with more than 60 Filipino community leaders, representing varied sectors of the Filipino community in Rome.

For the first time in his European tour, Justice Carpio showcased the exact digital reproduction of the famed Carta Hydrographica Y Chorographica de las Yslas Filipinas published in 1734 in Manila by the Jesuit Pedro Murillo Velarde, which is considered the mother of all Philippine maps.

A cartographic exhibit of ancient maps was also organized in both lectures to lend proof to the Philippine claim in the South China Sea. END
