05 June 2015 - The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco partnered with the Friends of the University of the Philippines Foundation in America (FUPFA) and the Office of the U.P. Vice President for Academic Affairs in hosting the San Francisco leg of the University of the Philippines Roadshow at the Philippine Center’s Social Hall on May 07.
In his remarks, Philippine Consul General Henry S. Bensurto Jr. underscored the role of the University of the Philippines in sustaining our country’s remarkable economic growth and progress, particularly in ensuring that Filipinos possess vital technical skills, knowledge, and expertise to keep up with ASEAN counterparts and to be competitive worldwide.
“UP’s mission of promoting exchanges of experts and scientists among the University and major universities in the Bay Area also falls within the Consulate’s thrust of promoting connectivity,” he added.
In her presentation, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gisela Concepcion said that while the University now has enough funding to update and build infrastructure that would provide students and academics a venue for in-depth innovation and invention, there was still a need to invest in the suprastructure, or the human capital.
“I encourage Filipino-American scientists to look at the various programs that UP offers, including post graduate courses, as well as teaching and mentoring programs in the sciences and the arts, which seek to uplift the quality of the work force in the Philippines,” she said.
San Francisco was the seventh and last leg of the Roadshow, with previous stops in Vienna, London, Berlin, Paris, New York and Salt Lake City. END
