19 June 2015 – Philippine Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio of the Supreme Court of the Philippines visited Sydney and Canberra from June 04 to 06.
On June 05, Justice Carpio met with the members of the Filipino community media and Filipino-Australian lawyers in New South Wales at the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney. He gave a brief synopsis of the lecture he delivered at the School of Law, University of Wollongong on June 04 and responded to questions from the audience.
The Filipino-Australians present were interested to know what would happen after the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) hands down its decision on the case filed by the Philippines. They thanked Justice Carpio for his clear and comprehensive explanation of the details of the Philippine case before ITLOS and what is at stake for Filipinos, particularly for the future generation.
Justice Carpio said that the Filipino people are rallying behind the Philippine Government’s efforts on the West Philippine Sea to protect our sovereignty as a nation and to show the rest of the world that the rule of law must be respected.
At the end of the meeting, the Filipino-Australian lawyers led by Atty. Lolita Farmer presented Justice Carpio with a plaque of appreciation commending his dedication, commitment and advocacy of Philippine interests on the South China Sea and for his efforts to uphold the rule of law. END
