mexico lecture

30 June 2015 - The Philippine Embassy in Mexico led by Ambassador Catalino R. Dilem, Jr., and accompanied by Cultural Officer Rosabelle Q. Toledo and Assistance-To-Nationals (ATN) Officer Angele P. Queja, attended the 9th of the lecture series on the Manila Galleon Cultural Route  on June 10 at the Palacio de Cortes in Cuernavaca, State of Morelos.

The 9th lecture entitled “Chronicle of Professor Candido Diaz, of Philippine Origin, in Jojutla de Juarez, Morelos, During the XIX Century” was conducted by Professor Guillermo Mañon, chronicler of Jojutla and Tlaquiltenango, State of Morelos.

The lecture dealt about one of the early Filipino settlers in Mexico, Professor Candido Diaz, who was the son of a Malay woman and a Spanish ship captain who became an insurgent in Manila against Spanish rule.    

 

Professor Candido Diaz  was a relevant political and social character in the history of the City of Jojutla during the last decade of the XIX century.  

He was an educator and later became a political leader and held various government positions in the State of Morelos such as Mayor of Jojutla in 1896, Minister of Education of the State of Morelos and Congressman from 12 September 1910 to May 1911. He educated the young members of prominent families in his school, bringing ideas and actions highly influenced by his Philippine origin and his Jesuit education in Hong Kong.

 

Also discussed in the lecture was the significant role the Manila Galleon played in the economic activities of the population, with the  arrival of variety of goods, agricultural products and the accompanying skills which brought about the development and progress to Jojutla and the State of Morelos.   END
