Chicago return of Kalinga Ax1

04 September 2013 – The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago recently received from Mr. Harold Todd of Rockford, Illinois, a Philippine head ax that was in his possession since he found it in Luzon during World War II.

The possession of the ax by Mr. Todd was initially brought to the attention to the Consulate General by his neighbor, Mr. Harley Shepherd.

According to Mr. Todd, he was a member of the US Air Force Weather Squadron and discovered the ax sometime in 1942 while they were building an airfield somewhere north of Manila. The ax was discovered 2 feet underground, and has been in his possession since. Mr. Todd wishes to donate the ax to the National Museum of the Philippines.

The ax, which appears to be a Tinguian-Kalinga Head Ax, was received by Consul General Leo Herrera-Lim at Peterson Meadows Retirement Community in Rockford, Illinois last August 30.  Accompanying the Consul General was Vice Consul Ricarte Abejuela III and Ms. Anna Liza Alcantara.

The Consul General received the head ax on behalf of a grateful Philippine government and will hand over this important Philippine artifact to the National Museum at a future date. END
