25 August 2015 - The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago participated in the 12th Chicago International Screenings Program at the Chicago Cultural Center on August 19.
This year’s Philippine entry is the independent film “K’Na, The Dreamweaver” by Director Ida Anita Del Mundo. It is a story of a young princess of the T’boli indigenous group who discovers that she has been chosen by the gods as her village’s dream weaver. Because of this, she has the ability to weave together her village’s warring tribes, but she must give up her one true love to do so. The film was set in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato in the islands of Mindanao, Philippines.
Deputy Consul General Romulo Victor M. Israel, Jr. gave his opening remarks at the packed 260-seat Claudia Cassidy Theater. The screening was very well attended and warmly received by the audience, who are mostly members of the Filipino-American community.
A sample product of the Sama tribal community, courtesy of the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP), was displayed at the theater entrance to give the viewers a sense of the unique and intricate design and craftsmanship of the traditional weavers of the Philippines.
The program is presented by the Cinema Chicago, in cooperation with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Chicago Consular Corps and cultural partners, showcasing 18 films from around the world that are not widely available in the U.S. The weekly film series will run from May 27 to September 23.
