Agana exhibit1 2

12 September 2013 - The Philippine Consulate General in Agana and the Guam Filipino Artists (GFA) opened the 18th Exhibit of the Guam Filipino Artists (GFA) at the Consulate on September 11.

The exhibit features the works of the two GFA members, Mr. Zamie Zamora and Ms. Marilyn Nicely.

Mr. Zamora studied Fine Arts in Manila. As an artist, he believes that art means expressing one’s ideas and feelings through the use of colors. His ideas in style enabled him to explore infinite lines and colors and his artworks showcase abstract expressionism, cubism and surrealism.

On the other hand, Ms. Nicely graduated from the University of Guam and is currently working in advertising company on Guam.  Her passion in the arts began when she did her first pencil sketching just for fun. She then taught herself and tried to do her first-ever water color and oil pastel artwork but her real favorite is to do art installation which is something that she picked up from her father. She also loves arranging pictures in a collage. As one of the advocates of promoting the Philippine culture on Guam, Ms. Nicely is a co-founder and one of the regular hosts of the program “Kumusta Kabayan” of radio station 101.9 Megamixx.

Her featured artwork in the exhibit is an artistic collage entitled “Friendship is a Sheltering Tree,” a quotation borrowed from Sam Taylor C., formed into a tree and consisting of pictures of selected tourist attractions and sceneries as well as various community events of GFA and Filipinos on Guam.

The opening of the exhibit was attended by special guests, including Senators Dennis G. Rodriguez, Jr. and Frank B. Aguon, Jr. of the 32nd Guam Legislature; Ms. Monica Guzman, Chairperson of the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency (CAHA); Mr Joseph Hsu, President of the Federation of Asian and Pacific People on Guam; and Ms. Tessie Marcos, President of the University of the Philippines (UP) Alumni on Guam. It was also attended by friends of the two featured artists as well as GFA officers and members.

A surprise and special highlight of the opening ceremony was a musical performance by Mr. Nam Seung Woo, father of Mrs. Park Yeon Soo, a lady Korean painter who is also a GFA. Mr. Nam rendered two American country songs and a Korean song with guitar accompaniment, as a special dedication to Ms. Nicely who celebrated her birthday also on that day.

Philippine Consul General in Guam Bayani Mangibin expressed appreciation to the GFA for its continued dedication and support to the promotion of Philippine culture and cultural understanding which is an important element for building friendship. END
