To open the program, Mr. Jun Callao of the Embassy’s Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Office serenaded the audience with his rendition of OPM songs “Ako’y Isang Pinoy” and “Handog,” while Filipino student Jerviz Espiritu recited “Sa Aking Mga Kabata” as part of the afternoon’s cultural programme.

In her remarks before the Filipino community, Ambassador Isleta noted that Sentro Rizal, as provided for under Republic Act 10066 (the National Cultural Heritage Act of 1999) will serve as a repository of materials on Philippine arts, culture and language, books, digital video discs, compact discs, films, magazines, artworks, etc. She mentioned that many events will be organized under the Sentro Rizal programme, such as Filipino language courses, film screenings, exhibits, poetry reading, and cuisine lessons. She also encouraged the community members to collaborate with the Embassy on such events and that the Embassy would welcome their initiative and participation in this regard.

Following the opening remarks, Ambassador Isleta and Chairman de Leon unveiled the bust of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, mounted on a pedestal. Filipino kids Vernon Alexander Aquino and Denzel Magpile then offered and laid a wreath of flowers.

After the ceremony, the inaugural lecture of Chairman de Leon, a renowned authority on Philippine culture, was held.  Chairman de Leon discussed “What Makes Filipinos Filipino” and explained the distinct Filipino cultural identity and values. The lecture was filled with music and stories that made it thoroughly memorable. The inaugural lecture served as a fitting highlight to the afternoon’s event. The activity was capped with fellowship and traditional Filipino snacks served by the Embassy. END
