11 December 2015 – The Philippines successfully contributed to “Orange the World” by lighting up the entranceway and doors of the Philippine Center Building in orange on December 07. “Orange the World” is a part of the UN Secretary-General’s campaign to “UNiTE to End Violence against Women,” which uses the color orange to symbolize a brighter future without violence.
Ambassador Lourdes O. Yparraguirre, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered opening remarks at the event, which is part of a broader effort by the Philippine Government to raise awareness among all stakeholders that violence against women is a public issue of national concern. Philippine Consul General Mario L. de Leon, Jr. also delivered remarks at the event, which coincided with the lighting of the Philippine Center’s parols, evoking stars that symbolize the victory of light over darkness and of Filipinos’ hope and goodwill during the Christmas season.
“UNiTE to End Violence against Women” is a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence that links November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) with December 10 (International Human Rights Day), thus underscoring the fact that violence against women is a human rights violation. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and to mobilize people everywhere to bring about change. It is also part of the Philippines’ 18-day campaign to end violence against women, which ends on December 12 (International Day against Human Trafficking). END
