16 February 2016 – The Philippine Embassy in Yangon, as part of its celebration of 60 years of Philippines-Myanmar bilateral relations, formally turned over copies of the book, “Rizal: Philippine Nationalist and Martyr,” to the Universities’ Central Library and the University of Yangon Library on February 10.
Banned in Myanmar for 30 years, “Rizal: Philippine Nationalist and Martyr,” is now being distributed throughout Myanmar to the 48 affiliate libraries of the Universities’ Central Library and the University of Yangon Library. Written by British author Austin Coates and translated to Burmese by U Myat Nyein, the book features the biography of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, whose novels inspired the nation’s freedom.
Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex G. Chua said the Philippines, as a member of the ASEAN Community, is keen to promote understanding in the ASEAN region. He expressed hope that the book on the Philippines’ national hero will contribute to a greater understanding of the Philippines and the Filipino people and bring closer friendly ties between the Philippines and Myanmar.
Daw Ni Ni Naing and Dr. Hlaing Hlaing Gyi, Head Librarians of the Universities’ Central Library and the University of Yangon Library thanked the Embassy for the donation and expressed hope for further collaboration with Philippine academic institutions. END
