24 February 2016 - The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago hosted a reception entitled “EDSA @ Trenta” on February 18 at the Kalayaan Hall of the Consulate General on its “Ika-15 Pagkikita sa Konsulado” for the month of February in commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
A video clip entitled “4 Days of Heroism in EDSA” was shown, followed by a forum involving members of the community, Messrs. Willi R. Buhay, Alvar Rosales and Ruben Salazar, who shared their personal experiences and thoughts in those four historic days at EDSA and the years of activism leading to EDSA. Mr. Mariano Santos of Pinoy News also looked back to the significant events and personalities in Chicago who were involved in growing anti-Marcos movement in the Philippines.
Philippine Consul General to Chicago Generoso DG Calonge delivered a message on this year’s theme “Pagbabago: Ipinaglaban Nyo, Itutuloy Ko!” He encouraged those in attendance, especially the youth, to continue honoring those who sacrificed for the revolution and that real freedom can only be attained with continued support and cooperation of our communities, our leaders and the family of nations. He also highlighted the inspiration and impact of the bloodless EDSA revolution on the emergence of other democracies around the world.
Deputy Consul General Romulo Victor M. Israel, Jr. shared important announcements and updates on Overseas Voting, the pending Congressional Gold Medal Act for Filipino Veterans and NOW Tour 2016.
A musical rendition of the song “Handog ng Pilipino Sa Mundo” by Ms. Divine Aleonar, Global Pinoy Singing Idol 2012 USA Champion, brought back memories of the Philippines during the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Photo opportunities and a light reception capped the evening’s event. END
