1 March 2016 – The Philippine Consulate General in Agana, Guam, commemorated today the 30th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution with the theme: “Pagbabago: Ipinaglaban N’yo, Itutuloy Ko!”
The celebration started with a flag raising ceremony attended by the Consular Corps, government officials, Senators of the 33rd Guam Legislature, and representatives of the Filipino Community. The singing of the Philippine National Anthem was led by Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy with the Consulate’s ATN officers Juliet Simbul and Philip Tabula hoisting the Philippine flag.
It was followed by a short program at the Cultural Affairs Section of the Consulate General where the logo of the 30th Anniversary of EDSA and some photos of the events during the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 were on display. The highlight of the event was the turn-over ceremony of the donation of children’s books about EDSA entitled “Isang Harding Papel” by Augie Rivera and “EDSA” by Russel Molina. The books donated by the EDSA People Power Commission were given over by Consul General de Borja to representatives from the Tamuning Elementary School and St. Anthony Catholic School. Misses Nancy L. Kelly and Anne Dacanay, librarians of the Tamuning Elementary School, and Mr. Rolly Zepeda, art teacher of the St. Anthony Catholic School, accepted the book donation on behalf of their respective schools.
In his remarks, Philippine Consul General to Agana Marciano R. de Borja, recalled his experience as a university student during the EDSA revolution and emphasized the significance of the three-decade old historical event that restored democracy and freedom in the Philippines.
A 20-minute audio visual presentation on the history of the EDSA People Power Revolution entitled “For God and Country: Four Days of Heroism in EDSA” was also screened for the audience. Breakfast was served after the short program.
During breakfast, some of the teachers and leaders of the Filipino organizations expressed interest in obtaining a copy of the EDSA books and to borrow the audio visual presentations for them to share with their students, as well as with other FilCom members during their monthly meeting.
Other distinguished guests during the ceremony included members of the 33rd Guam Legislature led by Senators Tom Ada, Dennis G. Rodriguez, Jr., Frank B. Aguon, Jr. and Tina Muña Barnes; Mayor Melissa Savares of Dededo; members of the Consular Corps; teachers; members of the business community and officers and members of other Filipino associations.
