YANGON

02 March 2016-The Philippine Embassy in Yangon, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, organized a book reading session at the Philippine Chancery on February 28.

The event was attended by more than 30 Filipino and Myanmar orphans from the Myo Myanmar Youth Development Centre, an orphanage managed by U Thet Lwin and his Filipino spouse, Ms. Maritess Lwin.

Ei Pwint Rhi Zan, Project Director of the Third Story Project, a local Non-Government Organization dedicated to promoting literacy to children in conflict areas throughout Myanmar, acted out children’s stories written by Myanmar authors. The Embassy’s Cultural Attaché Lizbeth Pangan also read out Russel Molina’s EDSA, a retelling of the story of the peaceful revolution in 1986. The Embassy also distributed “Postcards for Peace” and encouraged the Filipino and Myanmar children to write a greeting of peace to one another.

Myanmar is embarking on its own peace process with more than 16 armed ethnic groups after more than five decades of struggle. The government is looking at examples in the region, including the Philippines, with its peace process with the Bangsamoro.

The EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 inspired many peaceful movements in the region, including those in Myanmar. END
