CAIRO

11 April 2016 – As part of its charitable activities in Egypt, the ASEAN Committee in Cairo (ACC) partially funded the purchase of an operating table for the newly renovated Alexandria Pediatric Surgery Department (APSD) of the El Shatby University Hospital in Alexandria.

At the opening ceremony of the APSD held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Philippine Ambassador to Egypt Leslie J. Baja, as current ACC Chair, conveyed the group’s appreciation for the work of the hospital in catering to indigent clients. He vowed for the ACC to continue reaching out to communities in need in Egypt.

The APSD is the foremost pediatric center in northern Egypt; performing some 4,500 surgeries and serving more than 20,000 outpatients yearly. Six operating tables, including that donated by the ACC, are among the APSD’s new facilities in its refurbished quarters.

Various donors from the diplomatic and business communities and civil society groups in Egypt contributed to the renovation and were acknowledged during the opening ceremony.

The ACC is composed of the embassies of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in Egypt. END
