Yangon

06 May 2016 - In a continuous effort to reach out to universities in various parts of Myanmar, the Embassy of the Philippines in Yangon visited Yadanarpon University, Mandalay University and University of Medicine on May 02 in Mandalay to promote the 60th anniversary of the Philippines-Myanmar bilateral relations.

Based on the experience of the Philippines, Minister and Consul General Maria Lourdes M. Salcedo discussed the importance of education to the development of a country. “It is a great equalizing cause for a developing country like the Philippines and Myanmar,” she said.  She also articulated the need for both countries to further expand friendship by learning about each other’s history and culture, especially as both countries join other 8 countries in building an ASEAN Community.

Members of the faculty of the three Universities avowed that they studied the life and struggle of Dr. Jose Rizal as young students.  The Philippine national hero is being likened to the great martyr and independence fighter Bogyoke Aung San, father of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, currently the State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of Myanmar.

Officials from the Universities of Mandalay and Yadanarpon expressed their desire to have more exchanges and collaboration on education between the Philippines and Myanmar to further strengthen the relations of both countries. END
