26 May 2016 –The Philippine Embassy in Yangon, in partnership with the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and International Studies (MISIS), organized a talk by Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex G. Chua on The Philippine Arbitration Case on the South China Sea on May 26.

Ambassador Chua discussed the developments in the Philippines’ arbitration case on the South China Sea. The Ambassador underscored the significance of the Philippines’ arbitration case as it seeks a just and durable solution grounded on international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He stressed the Philippines’ support for the full implementation of the Declaration of Conduct of Parties on the South China Sea (DOC) and the expeditious conclusion of a binding Code of Conduct (COC). Ambassador Chua expressed hope that parties to the arbitration case on the South China Sea will abide by the arbitral tribunal’s decision which is expected to be released in a few weeks.

Ambassador Chua likewise touched on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Philippines-Myanmar bilateral relations. He said people-to-people exchanges remain the bedrock of the warm relations between the two countries. 

The talk at MISIS, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats, and students and lecturers from various universities, is part of the continuing efforts of the Philippine Embassy to engage with think tanks in Myanmar with the establishment of the ASEAN Community. END
