BRP GUAM

01 June 2016 – The Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Gregorio Velasquez, officially turned over by the US Government to the Philippines and commissioned into active service with the Philippine Navy on April 27 in San Diego, California, reached Guam waters late evening of May 28. 

The Philippine Consulate General led by Consul General Marciano R. de Borja welcomed the officers and crew of the BRP Gregorio Velasquez led by Commander Edwin M. Nera on May 29 at 10:00 AM at the Guam Naval Base grounds in Piti, Guam. 

In his remarks, Consul General de Borja expressed that the newly-acquired vessel is a welcome addition to the Philippine Navy’s fleet.

Commander Nera gave a briefing and tour of the research vessel which will provide the Philippine Navy with hydrographic survey and maritime research capabilities.   

The BRP Gregorio Velasquez is named after Filipino scientist Gregorio Velasquez, Professor Emeritus of botany at the University of the Philippines known for his pioneering research in phycology, or the study of algae. The 279-foot 2,516-ton research vessel is the former R/V Melville operated by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography for oceanographic research.  The vessel will depart Guam on May 31 and is expected to arrive in Manila on June 10.
