02 June 2016 - The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong and members of the Filipino Community in Hong Kong jointly commemorated the Philippine Flag Day on May 26 with a simple program held at Morrison Hill Playground. It was around the area in Morrison Hill where Marcela Agoncillo, assisted by her daughter, Lorenza, and by the niece of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, sewed the first Philippine national flag in May 1898.
The program started with the singing of the Philippine national anthem, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony led by Deputy Consul General Christian L. De Jesus and Consul Charles Andrei P. Macaspac.
During his remarks, Deputy Consul General De Jesus emphasized the significant symbolism attached to the Philippine flag, beginning from the Filipino revolutionaries’ struggle for independence during colonial times - a symbol of unity, oneness in aspirations, and an emblem of patriotism and bravery. Thus, he encouraged the audience to give utmost respect and care to the Philippine flag. He also highlighted the significance of Hong Kong in the history of the Philippine flag.
Executive Order No. 179 issued on 23 May 1994 enjoined all government departments, agencies, offices and government-owned or controlled corporations to prominently display the Philippine flag from May 28 to June 12.END
