09 June 2016 - Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Jose D.R. Burgos met with Senator Ana Amélia Lemos at the Federal Senate on June 06. Upon the former’s invitation, Senator Lemos agreed to be the Guest of Honor during the Celebration of the 118th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence and the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Philippine-Brazilian diplomatic relations on June 16.

A former journalist, Senator Lemos sits as a Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is one of the 21 Senators who comprise the Impeachment Review Commission which was set up to decide on the merits of the impeachment petition against former President Dilma Rousseff. Senator Lemos represents Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul. Rio Grande do Sul’s land area is approximately the same size as that of the entire land mass of the Philippines.

Senator Lemos expressed keen interest in expanding relations between the Philippines and Brazil, noting that the Philippines can be a key partner of Brazil as her country looks to the Asia-Pacific region as a strategic area for trade, investments and more people-to-people contact. END
