15 June 2016 - The Philippine Embassy in Muscat celebrated the 118th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 12 by holding the traditional flag-raising ceremony followed by the reading of the Independence Day messages of the President and the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs and Labor and Employment. Representatives of the Filipino Community Social Club (Filcosoc) and affiliated organizations as well as other Filipinos residing and visiting in Oman joined in the morning festivities.
Times of Oman, one of the major newspapers in the Sultanate, also published a 4-page special supplement for the occasion. The supplement contained feature articles from the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST), as well as news stories about the Philippine-Oman relations. It also includes the Independence Day messages of the President, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and the Philippine Ambassador.
The Embassy also supported the commemorative activities undertaken by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO):
- A one-day bowling tournament conducted by POLO in cooperation with the Pinoy Bowlers of Oman on June 03. At least 70 bowlers participated in the event.
- The “Miss OFW Oman 2016”, the first Filipino beauty pageant in Oman, which was co-organized by POLO, Filcosoc and Migrant Workers Committee. About 300 Filipinos and some expatriates attended the event. END
