15 June 2016 - The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai hosted a traditional Filipino breakfast at the Consulate in celebration of the 118th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. With this year’s theme “Kalayaan 2016: Pagkakaisa, Pag-aambagan, Pagsulong,” the simple yet meaningful breakfast reception centered around the Filipino value of celebrating milestones by bringing together family and friends around a meal.

Consul General Wilfredo R. Cuyugan welcomed key Filipino community leaders in Shanghai, Consulate personnel and local Chinese staff to the breakfast. The Philippine anthem was sung, followed by the Panunumpa sa Watawat and a reading of the Independence Day message of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

This community breakfast is in fact a prelude to a more comprehensive celebration of Independence Day which will be held on June 25 at the International Philippine School in Shanghai where children under the auspices of the Sonflowers Organization based in Shanghai will be invited to a day of thanksgiving, fun and camaraderie. The breakfast was followed by a working meeting between the Filipino community leaders and Consulate officials to discuss and finalize plans for the celebration at the Philippine International School in Shanghai.
