24 June 2016 - The Philippine Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand led by Philippine Ambassador to Wellington Jesus S. Domingo hosted a diplomatic reception on June 14 in celebration of the 118thAnniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence at the Te Marae of Te Papa Museum.
The event was attended by one hundred fifty guests from the Diplomatic Corps, Government of New Zealand, Members of Parliament, business sector, academe, various organizations and associations in New Zealand.
The Honorable Simon Bridges, Minister of Energy and Resources and Minister of Transport, was the guest of honor. In his speech, Minister Bridges stated that the relationship of New Zealand and the Philippines “is warm and long-standing” and “has witnessed a significant increase in engagement over the last several years.” He pointed out that with interpersonal links, an important trade relationship and growing education, increasing air connectivity, and labor links, there’s no doubt that the relationship holds much potential for growth. In recognition of New Zealand’s and the Philippines’ longstanding relations, Minister Bridges proposed a toast to His Excellency President Benigno S Aquino III, and to the Government, the representatives, and the people of the Republic of the Philippines.
In his remarks, Ambassador Domingo stated that the “celebration highlights fifty years of diplomatic relations, close friendship and mutually beneficial partnership between the Philippines and New Zealand.” He also noted that “the Philippines and New Zealand are one in its shared adherence to democratic values and principles, good governance, rules-based approaches, peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, peace building and respect for human rights in the face of challenges to our regional and global environment and security.” Ambassador Domingo concluded his remarks with a toast to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of New Zealand, the Government and People of New Zealand and the close ties and friendship between the Philippines and New Zealand.
The National Anthems of New Zealand and the Philippines were beautifully rendered by the Wellington Filipino Community Choir. They also performed a nostalgic repertoire of classic and well-loved Filipino songs, namely, Sitsiritsit, Dandansoy, Ikaw, and Bahay Kubo. END
