27 June 2016 – The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi concluded its month-long celebration of the 118th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence in June with a cultural performance featuring the Alunalun Dance Circle (ADC) at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Teen Murti House, the former official residence of the first Prime Minister of India.
The Alunalun Dance Circle performance in India was made possible with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of the Undersecretary of International and Economic Relations (OUIER) Cultural Diplomacy Unit (CDU). The Alunalun Dance Circle’s performance “Water Symphony” showcased Pangalay, an indigenous classical dance by the Tausug people of the Sulu archipelago with distinct wrist and finger movements.
Philippine Ambassador to India Ma. Teresita C. Daza, in her welcome remarks, highlighted the significance of the classical dance form in speaking of the sensitivity of the ASEAN soul and the cultural links with Asia. The Pangalay has roots in India and South East Asia. The ADC repertoire entitled “Water Symphony” is equally meaningful in calling attention to the nature, importance and power of water. In the past, she said, the seas served as a bridge that allowed the flow of trade, culture and people.
2015 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Dr. Ligaya Fernando Amilbangsa, Ph.D., Artistic Director and Choreographer, led the members of the Alunalun Dance Circle, namely: Ms. Rosalie Matilac, Ms. Mariel Siapao, Ms. Sarah L. Tajonera, Ms. Louanne L. Calipayan, Mr. Jimo B. Angeles, Mr. Mannex Siapao, Mr. Levi G. Azarcon, Mr. Phoenix L. Tajonera, Ms. Maria Loren C. Rivera, technical officer, and Ms. Cynthia C. Paz, camera/videographer. Dr. Amilbangsa stated that Pangalay is a pre-colonial dance that is versatile enough, like water, and can be accompanied by traditional melodies to kundiman tunes and even Indian music.
The Alunalun Dance Circle performance in India was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from the Government of India, international organizations, culture, academe, business sectors, and the Filipino community. END
