Statement: On Tropical Cyclone 1821 in Japan
04 September 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is calling on the Filipino Community in Japan to take the necessary precautions as Tropical Cyclone 1821 (international name: Jebi) will hit the country today.
The DFA is monitoring the typhoon, said to be the strongest to hit Japan in 25 years, and is in close coordination with both the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo and the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka.
The 280,000 members of the Filipino Community in Japan have been told to restrict their movement and monitor updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and announcements from their respective local authorities, including possible evacuations and disruption of mass transport services.
Ambassador to Japan Jose C. Laurel said the typhoon is expected to affect the Shikoku, Kinki, Tohoku, Tokai and Hokuriku regions. He said that both the Embassy and the Consulate are ready to provide assistance to Filipinos if needed. END
