Statement: On Death Penalty Case in Indonesia

11 October 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) wishes to clarify that there is no Filipino who has been sentenced to death in Semarang, Indonesia.

According to the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, the only Filipino sentenced to death in Indonesia is Mary Jane Veloso, who is presently detained in Yogyakarta, and not in Semarang.

Ambassador Leehiong T. Wee said there is a Filipino in prison is Semarang but she is serving a life sentence for illegal drugs-related crimes.

Last month, the Embassy assisted Veloso’s family to visit her in detention. Ambassador Wee said Veloso is healthy and in good spirits, and expressed her gratitude in seeing her family.

The DFA, through the Embassy and its legal counsel, will continue to assist Veloso and her family in accordance with Philippine and Indonesian law. END
