Update No. 2 on Hurricane Michael
11 October 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is closely monitoring the movement of Hurricane Michael over the state of Georgia.
The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. said Michael made landfall midday Wednesday in Panama City in Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, which is home to some 3,300 members of the Filipino Community.
In a report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano, Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez said there were no reports of any Filipinos being adversely affected by the storm although some Filipinos evacuated their residences. Ambassador Romualdez said most were affected by a power outage in the area.
Although the Michael has weakened into a tropical storm as it moved further inland, Ambassador Romualdez said the estimated 232,000 Filipinos in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, should continue taking the necessary precautions and heed the warnings of local officials. He said the Embassy will continue to monitor developments and coordinate with the Filipino Community in these areas.
Filipinos who may require assistance can call the Embassy at (202) 368 2767. END
