On Assistance Extended to Filipino Truck Drivers in Europe

08 November 2018 — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is now assisting at least 40 other Filipino truck drivers in Germany and Poland who have also been subjected to poor working and living conditions.

The Philippine embassies in Oslo, Berlin, and Warsaw are working closely with authorities in extending assistance to the drivers who were recruited in the Philippines. The DFA is also looking into the possibility that some of the drivers were trafficking victims.

The drivers are being assisted by the embassies, which have provided them with food and shelter and by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Geneva, which discussed their situation with their employer.

The case was first brought to the attention of the Philippine Embassy in Oslo, which attended to more than 20 truck drivers who were found to have been working and living in substandard conditions in Denmark. Forty other drivers have since contacted the embassies in Warsaw and Berlin for assistance. END
