Bulletin: On the Protests in Haiti

21 February 2019 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is in touch with the approximately 500 members of the Filipino Community in Haiti as it closely monitors the situation in the Caribbean country following violent protests that started on 8 February.

In his report to the Home Office, Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez said Filipinos in Haiti have been advised to stay indoors and prepare their personal security plans. Filipinos in Haiti are being encouraged to register online with the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. to facilitate communications and assessment of appropriate assistance.

Honorary Consul General Fitzgerald Brandt reported that Filipinos are safe and have so far stayed away from the affected areas. The protests have forced the closure of schools, shops, public transportation, and government offices in Port-au-Prince while roads have been rendered impassable by barricades.
