Message of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin Jr. on the Occasion of Canada Day
The Philippines joins Canada in commemorating the 155th anniversary of Canada’s confederation on 01 July 2022.
The Philippines deeply values its relationship with Canada, anchored on strong people-to-people ties, manifested in the presence of almost one million Filipinos and Canadians of Filipino heritage in Canada.
On behalf of the Filipino people, I would like to thank Canada and its people for the welcome it has extended to Filipinos who have made Canada their second home. I note that many serve at the frontlines of the health and service sectors while others excel in the field of arts, sports and politics.
The Philippines, likewise, hosts thousands of Canadians who have grown roots in the country and have found meaningful endeavors in the field of business and development. Prior to the pandemic, Canadians were one of the top tourists in the country who enjoyed the natural wonders of the Philippines and the warmth and hospitality of Filipinos.
As we navigate through the post-pandemic world order, the Philippines attaches great importance to harnessing people-to-people ties in forging a stronger and more strategic partnership with Canada. There is so much to build on as both countries uphold and promote their shared values of democracy and the rule of law, and of open, free, fair and inclusive trade both in the bilateral and multilateral fora.
Moving forward, the two countries’ recognition of their Pacific and maritime heritage would augur well for defining potential synergies in the field of defense, trade and investment, public safety, disaster-response and nuclear energy.
On behalf of the Philippine Government, I wish our old friend Canada, and Canadians in the Philippines and around the world happy Canada Day.
