Statement on the Earthquake in Southeast Türkiye
(As of 19 February 2023, 1600H Turkish Time)
Since the start of the crisis, the Ambassador and the Philippine Embassy in Ankara has been laser-focused in ensuring that as many Filipinos as possible were taken out of harm’s way from the affected areas of southeast Türkiye. Although we are ready to mobilize at a moment's notice, the Embassy shall now realign its efforts towards facilitating everyone’s return to normalcy.
The Philippine Government is hosting more than twenty (20) families in the Embassy shelter. The team has welcomed over seventy (70) individuals, composed of overseas Filipinos, children, Turkish spouses, and senior citizens.
Since the start of operations, the Embassy team has met more than seventy (70) Filipinos who have decided to remain in the provinces they have called home. Most were given assistance, according to their needs, while a handful respectfully declined so that it may be reserved for those in more dire situations.
The Embassy is accelerating its actions towards the repatriation of all qualified Filipino citizens who desire to return to the Philippines. For those who wish to remain in Türkıye, the Embassy may assist in referring to housing and financial programs and other services provided by the Turkish government for its displaced citizens.
The Filipino community in Ankara and across Türkiye continue to be a valued partner in developing a sense of normalcy for the shelterees.
It is with deepest regret that the Embassy must confirm the passing of a Filipina housewife and her three children, previously reported to be missing under the rubble in Antakya. She and her children have been laid to rest by her Turkish husband, in accordance with Turkish tradition. The Embassy and the entire Department of Foreign Affairs family express their deepest condolences for this tragedy.
The Embassy appreciates the continuous work of the Philippine Humanitarian Contingent Team in Adıyaman Province. They have swept through more than thirty (30) buildings since their arrival, while the Philippine Medical Assistance Team (PEMAT) has assisted at least 539 injured.
The Embassy remains open for any and all information on Filipinos who are affected by the earthquake.
