Indonesian Embassy in Manila Hosted the ASEAN Ladies Association Foundation Inc. on Afternoon Coffee and Conversation on Berkain

MAKATI 30 June 2023 – The ASEAN Ladies Foundation Inc. (ALF) in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Manila recently conducted a talk and workshop entitled Conversation on Berkain on 20 June 2023 held at the Indonesian Embassy in Makati City. 

The talk focused on ways to wear the “kain”, a cloth traditionally worn by Indonesians made of batik, silk, or cotton. Its pattern and embroidery differ from the province where the textile originated. 

It is usually worn as formal attire by women in Indonesia on important occasions, especially while performing rituals and activities such as setting out food offerings for the gods and spirits or dyeing the threads for weaving textiles. 

Mme. Ranny Angus Widjojo, current ALF President and spouse of the Indonesian Ambassador in Manila, graciously hosted the event. In her welcome remarks, she mentioned that she is “honored and privileged to be part of a multicultural lady’s group that promotes unity, friendship, respect, and social awareness.  She also emphasized that women are not only behind their husband’s successes but the definition of success itself because women will do everything in their capacity to initiate works that help break down cultural barriers, build bridges, and appreciate and respect those that are different from them. They may have different customs and traditions but often we share the same values. That is somehow, what everyone is trying to achieve – to peacefully and respectfully co-exist while promoting cultural interactivity.” 

In addition, ALF also conducted its 1st Board of Trustees meeting, which was especially convened to discuss ALF’s plans to celebrate this year’s ASEAN Day.

The event was graced by Mme. Pamela Louise Manalo, ALF Chairperson, H.E. Menan Megawati, Ambassador of the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Manila and ALF officers and members. END
