07 June 2017 MOSCOW – The Philippines took over the Chairmanship of the ASEAN Moscow Committee in simple ceremonies at the Malaysian Embassy on April 19.

The outgoing Chair, Malaysian Ambassador Dato’ Hayati Binti Ismail, turned over the Chairmanship by handing over the symbolic ASEAN Matryoska to Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta in the presence of the other ambassadors and heads of posts of ASEAN member countries in Moscow. The chairmanship is for a period of six months.

In accepting the chairmanship, Ambassador Sorreta thanked the Malaysian Ambassador for her leadership and initiatives. He said that he hoped to work closely with the ASEAN embassies in Moscow to have meaningful celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN, particularly since the Philippines is the current chair of ASEAN.

ASEAN Committees are established in certain countries, particularly those with a dialogue relationship with ASEAN, to safeguard and advance ASEAN interests through joint consultations with the host governments. An ASEAN Committee is the outpost of ASEAN in the capital of the host country. END
