PHL Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta Meets with Russian Expert to Discuss Prospects for PH-Russia Cooperation In Countering Terrorism

 Moscow

04 July 2017 MOSCOW –“Cooperation in the area of counter-terrorism will be mutually beneficial to the Philippines and Russia”, said Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta following his meeting with Prof. Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies (IOS) of Russia, on June 28 in Moscow.

Ambassador Sorreta noted that “Russia has a long experience in combating terrorism within and outside of its territory in collaboration with partner countries. The Philippines can benefit from Russia’s best practices and capabilities through closer interaction between security agencies, especially in the area of information exchange.”

On May 23, the National Security Council of the Philippines and Security Council of the Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Security in Zavidovo, Tver. This provides a framework for engagement on information exchange and consultations on strategic issues, among others.

“The MOU was one of the substantive outcomes of the official visit of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to Moscow on May 22 to 23. Its implementation can only strengthen the burgeoning ties between our two countries in defense and security,” Ambassador Sorreta added.

Ambassador Sorreta and Prof. Naumkin also exchanged views on developments in Syria and the larger Middle East region.

Prof. Naumkin is one of Russia’s leading experts on the Middle East. In 2015, he acted as moderator in the Inter-Syrian Moscow Meeting and, in 2016, as senior adviser to the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura. END
