PHL Embassy in Brunei Holds Gender and Development (GAD) Forum on Women’s Rights, Workshop on Self-Defense Techniques

06 April 2018 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam conducted a Gender and Development (GAD) forum on Women’s Rights and a workshop on Self Defense Techniques at the Embassy Chancery on March 23 in celebration of National Women’s Month.  Around 50 overseas Filipinos attended the event.

Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Meynardo L.B. Montealegre, in his welcome remarks, highlighted the significant role of women in today’s society and how important it is to know one’s rights especially in a foreign country.

During the forum, Vice Consul Jaybee R. Arguillas discussed the pertinent laws, both in Brunei and in the Philippines, which give protection to women and children against violence and sexual harassment. After the forum, a demonstration of self-defense techniques was demonstrated by Tsg. Romelito A. Galeos of the Office of the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché (DAFA), and Mr. Zosimo C. Crodua, Jr., an expert in judo and karate. A short briefing on emergency preparedness by Defense Attache Jose Ricky A. Laniog immediately followed the sessions.

The Embassy regularly conducts GAD activities that promote gender and development issues for the benefit of Filipinos in Brunei, particularly for their empowerment and enhanced productivity. END
