PHL Consulate General in Macau Honors Outstanding Filipinas

06 April 2018 MACAU – The Philippine Consulate General in Macau and the Philippine Overseas Labour Office held a ceremony honoring outstanding Filipinas in Macau at the Chan Meng Kam Community Center in celebration of Women’s Month.

The event’s theme, “Filipino Women: Expanding Influence and Leading Change” recognizes empowered Filipina women in Macau who have contributed to their workplace, local organizations, and society in general through their strength of character, hard work, and leadership. 

Nominations were open for three categories: Woman of Inspiration, Trailblazer Award, and Leadership Award. After interviews and rigorous deliberation by the Board of Judges, three winners were chosen and honored at the event.

Dr. Jesucita Lao Sodusta, an anthropologist by profession, was conferred  the Women of Inspiration Award for being a staunch advocate of women’s welfare and development, including wellness and social integration. Ms. Eugenia Faelangco Desano, one of the first Filipino medical technicians at the local public hospital, was awarded the Trailblazer Award for her continued outstanding work the past thirty years in her field. Ms. Marissa Celso Catan, a domestic worker in Macau for the past eight years, was given the Leadership Awards for her commitment to various local organizations where she exhibited her dedication and vision as a leader. A special award was also bestowed on Sister Rosa Viloria, RGS, a social worker in Macau since 1982. She specializes in prison ministry and the counseling of vulnerable and troubled youth. The finalists and nominees were also invited to attend the event and given due recognition.

During her remarks, Philippine Consul General in Macau Lilybeth R. Deapera highlighted the impact of the Filipinas overseas not only to her family and her place of work but also to the Philippines and the empowerment of women all over the world. The Consul General also encouraged learning new skills and education as means to embolden and inspire others to achieve more.

Members of the Filipino community prepared cultural performances during the awarding ceremony which was attended by more than 500 people. END
