HONG KONG 27 June 2018 – In celebration of Pride Month this June, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong invited Philippine media icon, educator, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI) rights advocate Dr. Boy Abunda to conduct a public talk at the Consulate Chancery on the struggle against gender discrimination and advocacy for broader social acceptance.
The talk entitled “Mga Kulay at Ngiti ng LGBT 2: Understanding LGBTQI Issues and the Story of a Nanay’s Gay Boy” focused on issues on how it is to be part of the LGBTQI community, discrimination, stereotypes, and the need for more gender sensitivity.
During his welcoming remarks, Consul General Antonio A. Morales underscored the importance of conducting gender sensitivity training as the primary reason why the Consulate pioneered the Mga Kulay at Ngiti ng LGBT initiative in 2017.
He also noted that LGBTQI members are some of the most successful and active members of the Filipino Community in Hong Kong.
Speaking to a full house comprising Filipino community members and media representatives, Dr. Abunda, who flew in from the Philippines pro bono for the talk, called for better legislation in the Philippines for LGBTQI people. He also discussed his fight for equal rights and against homophobia.
As a preview to his book due to be released later this year, “Nanay’s Gay Boy,” Dr. Abunda emphasized that family support and acceptance are key to understanding LGBTQI issues. He further emphasized that being part of the LGBTQI community should not limit one’s dreams of succeeding in life.
“Mga Kulay at Ngiti ng LGBT 2” is one of the projects under the auspices of the Consulate’s Gender and Development Program, in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, represented in Hong Kong by Social Welfare Attaché Elizabeth Dy. END
