DAMASCUS 14 December 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Damascus kicked off the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) by conducting a seminar on Syrian law and the rights of foreign women workers in Syria on 05 December 2018.
In his remarks at the start of the seminar, Charge d’Affaires Alex V. Lamadrid impressed upon the attendees the importance of everyone’s support to the campaign to create awareness on the need to stop VAW not only in society but also in the attendees’ households.
He also cited measures undertaken by the Philippine Government and the Embassy to end VAW and trafficking in persons.
The Embassy’s retainer lawyer, Atty. Omar Alzaim, shared his insights and expounded on the salient provisions of the Syrian labor law that applied to the majority of the attendees who were household workers. A total of 30 participants composed of Embassy personnel and wards at the Filipino Workers Resource Center attended the event.
Attendees of the lecture were also provided with various pamphlets on gender sensitivity and Philippine laws that focus on women’s rights, particularly on laws that penalize crimes and offenses against women.
At the end of the lecture, a moderated open forum with Atty. Alzaim and Embassy officials ensued, which enlightened participants regarding their concerns about VAW. The attendees partook of a lunch after the lecture. END
