WELLINGTON 20 December 2018 – Ambassador to New Zealand Jesus “Gary” S. Domingo was inducted as a "White Ribbon NZ" Ambassador by His Worship Mayor Ray Wallace, at a program held at the Walter Nash Centre, Lower Hutt, Wellington on 22 November 2018.

The White Ribbon Campaign aims to end Violence Against Women (VAW), by promoting men’s leadership and commitment to foster secure, healthy relationships within families, and to reject abusive attitudes and behaviour.

Men and boys wearing the White Ribbon declare that they will never commit, excuse, or remain silent about VAW.

The campaign was launched in 1991 by a group of men in Canada after the Montreal Massacre in December 1989 at the École Polytechnique in Quebec where 14 women were slain, is observed worldwide annually on November 25.

The date has been officially adopted by the United Nations as International Day for the Elimination of VAW. Introduced to New Zealand in 2004 by the UN Development Fund for Women, it is now active in many countries across the globe as it grows stronger with more men and boys realising that women and girls’ safety is their concern too. It is one of the world’s largest male-led VAW movements.

In New Zealand, most violence by men against women takes place at home. Annually, an average of 14 women a year are killed by partners or ex-partners, over 3,500 convictions are recorded against men for assaults on women, and one in five women will experience sexual assault or sexual interference at some point in their lives.

The White Ribbon advocacy will now be a key element of the Philippine Embassy in Wellington's Gender and Development and End VAW, advocacies as well as Volunteer Ambassadors and Youth Ambassadors programmes or #VAMBA and #YAMBA, respectively.
