DAMASCUS 13 March 2019 – The Philippine Embassy in Damascus kicked off the Women’s Month celebration with a film showing at the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC) on 07 March 2019.

In his opening remarks, Chargés d’Affaires (CDA), e.p. and Consul General Alex V. Lamadrid provided a brief background of the celebration and its significance for the women of today, noting that FWRC wards are all female and that 99 percent of Filipinos in Syria are women.

CDA Lamadrid also expounded on the significance of the recently enacted Republic Act No. 11210 or the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law, and the tenth anniversary of the enactment of Republic Act No. 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women.

With this year’s theme “We Make Change Work for Women,” CDA Lamadrid expressed his full support to empowering women as active contributors to national development.

The series of events for the month of March started with a documentary film about Wang Od entitled “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Mambabatok.” FWRC wards and Embassy staff appreciated how a tribal woman became an icon and a bearer of Philippine culture.

Other activities lined up at the Embassy’s FWRC are health and wellness exercises, livelihood seminars, and religious activities for the physical, mental and spiritual development of the FWRC wards. END
