Filipino human rights lawyer and Shari’a Law expert Atty. Laisa Masuhud Alamia discussed the topic, “How to Make Justice a Reality for Women and Girls,” where she mentioned that “a functional justice system works within its people’s genuine need.”

Presentations were focused on the absence, lack, accessibility, or affordability of formal justice systems in rural communities and villages in resolving issues that affect women and girls from their respective countries. These include issues such as girl-marriages, family disputes, access to land, gender-based violence and sorcery-related violence that are often resolved by village chiefs, elders, religious leaders or other similar customary and informal actors in what is called, CIJ - customary and informal justice system.
