NORWAY 22 January 2020 –– In observance of the Philippine Commission on Women’s 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, the Philippine Embassy in Oslo conducted an information seminar on Norway’s laws on domestic violence on 12 December 2019.
The seminar aimed to inform and equip members of the Filipino community not only with basic knowledge on Norway’s laws related to domestic violence, but also the procedure of filing a complaint and the remedies available to women abused by their husbands or partners.
As resource person of the seminar, a Norwegian lawyer affiliated with the Nordhus & Aarø law office Atty. Marit Vik, explained the relevant provisions of Norway’s Penal Code on domestic violence including abuse in close relationships (Section 282), aggravated abuse in close relationships (Section 283), physical assault (Section 271), bodily harm (Section 273), and aggravated bodily harm (Section 274).
Atty. Vik, Embassy personnel, and the Filipino community members also had an engaging discussion on the nuances of Norway’s laws on domestic violence, the challenges of implementing said laws, and other issues related to the protection of Filipino migrant women in Norway. In her final remarks, Atty. Vik reminded the Filipino community to encourage victims of abuse to immediately leave the abusive situation, report the abuse to the police, and consult a lawyer. End
