SYDNEY 13 March 2020 – In line with the International Women’s month celebration and as part of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney’s Gender and Development (GAD) activities for this year, ballroom dancing lessons were held on 05 March 2020 to promote health and wellness in the work environment especially for women.

The ballroom dance (Cuban cha-cha steps) were led by Mr. Novy Bereber, a Sydney based performing artist, choreographer, and dance teacher. Consul and GAD Focal Person Melanie Rita B. Diano, together with Consulate personnel, participated in the said ballroom dance activity. Philippine Consul General to Sydney Ezzedin H. Tago fully supported this wellness program as it provides work-life balance and contributes to stress management skills of the personnel.

The Consulate Team also participated in the “Purple Fridays” advocacy on 06 March 2020. The advocacy encourages women and men to advance women’s rights and gender equality, break gender stereotypes, stop gender-based violence, and discrimination against women by wearing anything purple on the first Friday of March. A Consulate also hosted a quick breakfast salu-salo with purple themed food like ube cake and purple puto were also shared among the personnel.

On 09 March 2020, the Consulate provided a special lane for women passport applicants called “Serbisyo para kay Juana”, and also offered morning tea, coffee, and biscuits to the early applicants.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. END
