PH Consulate General in Agana Celebrates Int’l Women’s Month

AGANA 13 March 2020 — The Philippine Consulate General in Agana, Guam, in partnership with the Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce (GWCC), celebrated the 2020 International Women’s Day (IWD) and Philippine National Women’s Month (NWM), with its sixth breakfast forum on 09 March 2020 at the Royal Ballroom A, Dusit Thani Guam Resort.
Philippine Consulate General in Agana Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy, Acting Head of Post, in his welcome remarks said, “we collectively work together, women and men alike, to continue to inspire women and young girls as agents of change, and accelerate efforts to achieve the UN Women goal of enabling Generation Equality.”
“We need to continue reminding ourselves every year that much more still remains to be done to achieve global gender parity. Again, let me extend a warm welcome to you all and please accept my grateful appreciation for joining us again at this year's forum,” Consul Hamoy said in closing.
With the themes “WE Make Change Work for Women” and #EachforEqual of NWM and IWD, respectively, the forum featured a panel of businesswomen who shared their stories of survival and success. The panel was composed of Barrett Enterprises Inc. (DBA Barrett Plumbing) President and 2019 Guam Business Magazine Businesswoman of the Year Ms. Jessica Barrett, Guam Surveyor LLC Co-founder Ms. Mary Joy Sotic, Isla Coatings and Roofing Supply President Dr. Jaylene Kent, and M80 Systems Inc President and Owner Ms. Jessica Leon Guerrero. Ms. Guam Bureau of Women’s Affairs Director Jayne T. Flores served as moderator of the panel discussions.
Guam-based Filipino entrepreneur and philanthropist Ms. Pacita “Cita” Abuan Tomada was this year’s keynote speaker. Ms. Tomada is the President of Alamo/National/Enterprise Car Rental and the owner of SureStay Hotel by Best Western.
Ms. Tomada presented the milestones she had accomplished in the business world. She shared that the fundamental driving force in all her endeavors is to provide employment opportunities especially to her kababayan, and to help the less fortunate.
Ms. Tomada spoke before an audience of notable women from government, business and the community including 35th Guam Legislature Senators led by Speaker Tina Rose Muña Barnes, officers and members of the GWCC led by Ms. Holly Rustick, women leaders of Filipino community organizations on Guam, academe, and media.
