PASAY CITY 01 April 2021 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) - Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office (MOAO) held a webinar on 31 March 2021 to commemorate the 500th year anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world, and National Women’s Month.
Stressing that “Philippine maritime culture has indeed contributed to the shaping of world history more than we realize”, Acting Assistant Secretary Maria Angela Ponce said that the seminar “will allow us to get acquainted with the first Filipina seafarers, re-acquainted with our Cebuano heroes, appreciate our cultural heritage, and instill in us a deep burning Filipino pride founded on the humanity and triumphs of our ancestors.”
Resource speakers Professor Vicente Angel S. Ybiernas, an economic historian and international relations scholar, and Dr. Cynthia N. Zayas of the UP Center for International Studies highlighted the maritime elements of these celebrations.
