PH Embassy in Papua New Guinea joins 18-day VAW campaign

PORT MORESBY, 15 December 2021 — The Philippine Embassy in Papua New Guinea held a forum on women’s health and rights in observance of the 18-day campaign to end violence against women (VAW), which is held annually from 25 November to 12 December, with this year’s theme “VAW-free Community starts with Me.”

Philippine Chargé d’ Affaires, a.i., to Papua New Guinea Ms. Sheryl Uy, opened the forum with a brief history of the campaign. The President of the Filipino Association of Papua New Guinea (FAPNG), Ms. Maria Roxan Cruz gave the welcome remarks.

Dr. Aileen Anihal, a Medical Officer and a General Practitioner at the Pacific International Hospital (PIH) and one of the active members of the contingency group composed of Filipino doctors in Port Moresby during the COVID-19 surge in Papua New Guinea, gave a lecture on sexual and reproductive health and rights and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Atty. Menchie Numi, a lawyer at Young & Williams Lawyers, gave a lecture on workplace sexual harassment consistent with the laws of Papua New Guinea.

The event ended with the participants affirming their commitment to the Safe Spaces Act by reciting the Safe Spaces Pledge. END
