YANGON 16 March 2022 – In commemoration of Women's Month, the Philippine Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar in cooperation with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG) and Social Security System (SSS) conducted the first in a series of Financial Literacy Webinars on 13 March 2022 via Google Meet with the Filipino Community.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipinos, mostly women, have lost their jobs. This coupled with their lack of knowledge on how to budget their limited resources inspired the Embassy to organize a webinar series to empower these Filipinos and encourage them to be financially independent.
In his opening remarks, Chargé d'Affaires Jan Michael Gomez emphasized the importance of financial independence for women. He expressed his appreciation to the different government agencies for their willingness to partner with the Philippine Embassy in giving guidance to the Filipino women in Myanmar to be more educated and aware on financial literacy and learn more about their investment options for their hard earned money.
During the webinar proper, representatives from BSP discussed about the Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA), a voluntary retirement saving program that supplements the existing retirement benefits of SSS, GSIS and employers. Ms. Cabading from SSS discussed the coverage programs for OFWs specifically the Workers' Investment & Savings Program, a supplemental pension for qualified members, and Flexi-fund, an additional savings plan for OFW members. Lastly, representatives from Pag-IBIG discussed about the Modified PagIBIG 2 (MP2), a voluntary savings program with higher dividends and shorter maturity term.
More than 30 Filipino attended the first day of the webinar series. END
