PH Embassy in Damascus Kicks Off the Celebration of the National Women’s Month with Award Winning Films

DAMASCUS 17 March 2022 — The Philippine Embassy in Damascus, in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, kicked off the National Women’s Month Celebration at the Filipino Workers Resource Center with a four-week film showing series entitled “Pelikula sa Pasuguan” featuring films that depict women empowerment and showcase the beauty of the Philippines on 06 March 2022.

The following films are included in the mentioned series: Sonata, a film starring Cherie Gil and Richard Gomez, and directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes; Bagahe, a masterpiece of Zig Dulay, starring Angeli Bayani, Boots Anson Roa, Shamaine Buencamino, Yayo Aguila and Sue Prado. Afterwards, the guests enjoyed Old Skool, directed by Cia Hermosa, starring Tessie Tomas; Insiang, directed by Lino Brocka, starring Hilda Koronel, Mona Lisa and Rez Cortez; K’na The Dreamweaver, directed by Ida Anita Del Mundo, starring Mara Lopez; and  the Signal Rock, directed by Chito Roño, starring Christian Bables and short films Replay, directed by Franky Arrocena, starring Ria Pelayo and Bulak Jereza, and Aliens Ata, directed by Glenn Barit, starring William Buenavente and Alexus Gelacio.

Following the guidelines of the Philippine Commission on Women, the Embassy also printed paraphernalia, such as placards and a photo wall with #WomenMakeChange theme. Embassy personnel and the Filipino Community in Syria will be wearing purple on all Sundays of the month as it is the first day of the workweek at Post.

The Embassy will also offer a free legal aid clinic via Facebook Live with Post’s legal retainer, Atty. Omar Al Zaim, where concerns regarding the laws of women and children of the host country will be discussed.

To cap off the National Women’s Month Celebration, the Embassy will hold the first ever International Women’s Film Festival, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Diplomatic Club of Syria, with the participation of the Embassy of the following countries: Argentina, Belarus, Chile, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Palestine, South Africa, and Venezuela. The Philippines will feature Sakaling Hindi Makarating, directed by Ice Idanan, Ang Babae Sa Likod ng Mambabatok, directed by Lauren Sevilla Faustino and Lola Loleng, directed by Che Tagmayon. This event will take place at the prestigious Damascus Opera House from 23 – 26 March 2022. END
