SANTIAGO 13 December 2022 - As part of the launch of the global 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), the Philippine Embassy in Chile conducted a Women Empowerment and Gender Sensitivity Lecture for 20 Filipino women leaders in Chile, closely followed by a Soap-Making Activity and Entrepreneurial Training both held at the Philippine Chancery in Las Condes on 26 November 2022.
Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Dennis John C. Briones, acting as the Embassy’s GAD Focal Point Officer, conducted the said Women Empowerment and Gender Sensitivity Lecture, which focused on addressing gender stereotypes, encouraging a more open perspective on gender roles, and underlining the importance of women empowerment in the society and economy. He similarly reinforced the importance of combating VAW in all its forms—anywhere in the world.
CDA Briones’s candid and open discussion with Filipino community leaders was followed by a Soap-Making Activity and Entrepreneurial Training by Mrs. Anna Katrina Briones, spouse of CDA Briones. She supervised the hands-on production of natural and environmentally friendly artisanal soaps in lavender, papaya-oatmeal and coffee-tea variants. She also discussed the business potential and marketing strategies for selling these products in the Philippines as well as in Chile.
The Embassy’s Consular and ATN Officer Mr. Jay Alere, Cultural Officer Brian Bustamante, Translator Julia Carolina Farias, and Mrs. Maribel Alere, spouse of Mr. Alere, all eagerly joined and assisted FilCom members throughout these activities.
The Embassy and participants ended the half-day event by sharing a small salu-salo at the Chancery and taking a group photo behind this year’s United for a VAW-Free Philippines banner.
