MOSCOW, 20 December 2021 – The Philippine Embassy in Moscow held a special lecture in observance of the 18-Day Campaign to end Violence against Women (VAW) conducted by Vice Consul Leslie Escosura-Bustamante on 12 December 2022.
In her presentation, Vice Consul Bustamante discussed the life cycle of gender-based violence (GBV) and stresses associated with repeated exposure to GBV, such as lasting effects on brain development and functioning, as well as trauma, which may lead to aggressive and anti-social behaviors and risky sexual practices and criminal activities.
She also presented relevant Philippine laws protecting and advancing the rights of women, such as Republic Act no. 9262, on the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004, and Republic Act no. 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act.
Philippine Ambassador to Russia Igor G. Bailen, on the other hand, mentioned that women and children are particularly susceptible to gender-based violence because of women’s vulnerability to domestic sexual and economic violence. Both of these types of violence affect a woman's safety and freedom. Increasing women's legal rights keeps them safe and able to build productive and happy lives.
Ambassador Bailen also stressed the importance of having a strong support system for victims of abuse, particularly in reporting cases and protecting victims against perpetrators. END
